Disaster Management

AusaidDisaster Management, Humanitarian Assistance & Reconstruction

The expanding need for international responses to complex and natural disasters has increasingly brought together the civilian and military components in disaster management. This requires stronger coherence in objectives, resources outputs and training. However, the civilian-military sectors are now increasingly overlapping in preparation for and responding to disasters working together in the sector while at the same time maintaining their own respective identities. In order to maximise effectiveness of interventions and efficiency of resources it is critical that the civilian and military sectors harmonise future efforts in disaster management.

The Centre will work closely with organisations involved in disaster management to enhance Australia's overall international outcomes in civil-military operations in the disaster management cycle. The Centre will not be a primary response agency but will identify opportunities to work with governments, non government organisations, the United Nations, multilateral organisations, academic institutions and centres of excellence to progress civil-military collaboration in disaster management.

The Centre contributed to the co-chairing of the 3rd Asia Pacific Conference for Military Assistance to Disaster Relief Operations (MADRO) with the United Nations, Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN OCHA)
